Job Description

Job Title: Senior Refrigeration Maintenance Technician
Location: Lexington - BIO OPS

About the role:

As a Senior Refrigeration & Cold Storage Technician, you will report to the Senior Maintenance and Utilities Manager and support the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of refrigeration and cold storage systems that support Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) manufacturing and storage operations. You will maintain validated temperature-controlled environments critical to product quality, using advanced troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and system monitoring to ensure reliable performance and continuous plant readiness. As a senior technical resource, you will take ownership of cold storage system performance, lead complex technical problem-solving, and provide guidance to technicians and contractors while improving equipment reliability, reducing operational risk, and maintaining regulatory compliance. This is a non-supervisory, on-site role requiring technical expertise and support for manufacturing operations and shift coverage needs.

How you will contribute:

  • Ensure the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of temperature-controlled environments, including ultra-low-temperature freezers, refrigerators, warm rooms, and GMP warehouse storage areas.
  • Take ownership of cold storage system performance, proactively identify equipment risks, and implement solutions to maintain validated conditions and prevent operational disruptions.
  • Execute complex preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on refrigeration systems, including compressors, chillers, evaporators, ultra-low-temperature storage equipment, and Building Automation System (BAS) controls.
  • Lead troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective actions to resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and control system issues and prevent recurrence.
  • Respond promptly to alarms, temperature excursions, and abnormal system conditions, restoring compliant operating environments and ensuring appropriate escalation, communication, and documentation.
  • Monitor system performance, analyze trends, and identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, temperature stability, energy efficiency, and asset lifecycle performance.
  • Provide technical coaching, mentorship, and guidance to peer technicians and external contractors, promoting high standards of workmanship, safety, accountability, and maintenance execution.
  • Prioritize and schedule maintenance activities based on operational requirements, business priorities, and equipment criticality. Complete work orders accurately and on time in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Support the commissioning, qualification, and startup of cold storage systems, including installation qualification (IQ), operational qualification (OQ), and performance qualification (PQ). Participate in deviations, investigations, corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs), and change control processes.
  • Manage and report facility refrigerant usage in accordance with applicable Massachusetts requirements and environmental regulations. Oversee contractors within assigned areas, ensuring work complies with site procedures, safety standards, and quality expectations.

What you bring to Takeda:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with 4–8 years of relevant experience in industrial refrigeration and cold storage maintenance, preferably within a GMP-regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification, with demonstrated compliance in refrigerant handling and environmental regulations.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of industrial refrigeration systems, including chillers, compressors, evaporators, refrigeration controls, and ultra-low-temperature storage infrastructure, including minus 80°C systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and control system issues across refrigeration and facility systems, with experience in preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs.
  • Strong understanding of current GMP requirements, maintenance documentation, equipment qualification, data integrity, and audit readiness within a regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of Building Automation Systems and refrigeration control systems, including alarm response, system monitoring, and the ability to interpret piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), electrical schematics, and mechanical drawings.
  • Strong commitment to safety, environmental compliance, reliability, and continuous improvement, including knowledge of lockout/tagout, hazardous material handling, and site safety protocols. Comfort using digital tools and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence-enabled processes and electronic systems supporting procurement, safety, refrigerant monitoring, maintenance, and quality management. Ability to meet physical requirements, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), gowning for pharmaceutical manufacturing areas, lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, climbing ladders and working from platforms, bending or stooping to inspect or troubleshoot equipment, handling approved site chemicals, and traveling or working across Massachusetts Bio Operations facilities as required.

Important Considerations

At Takeda, our patients rely on us to deliver quality products. As a result, we must follow strict rules in our manufacturing facilities to ensure we are not endangering the quality of the product. In this role, you may:

  • Work in a controlled environment requiring special gowning and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. This may include additional hearing protection for loud areas.
  • Need to remove all make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish and/or artificial fingernails while in the manufacturing environment.
  • Work in a cold, wet environment.
  • Work multiple shifts, including weekends, or be asked to work supplemental hours, as necessary.
  • Work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and Celite that may require respiratory protection.

This is an on-site role required to support GMP manufacturing operations, plant readiness, and shift coverage needs.
