Job Description

Job Title: Senior Instrumentation & Metrology Technician
Location: Lexington, Massachusetts (On-Site)

About the role:

As a Senior Instrumentation & Metrology Technician, you will support the safe, compliant, and reliable performance of critical instrumentation, measurement, and control systems supporting good manufacturing practice (GMP) manufacturing operations at Takeda’s Lexington site. You will perform advanced calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and diagnostic activities to maintain the accuracy, integrity, and functionality of process equipment and utility systems. Working within the Site Engineering organization, you will help maintain continuous plant readiness, minimize production risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and improve equipment reliability through precise measurement and control. This on-site role is essential to supporting GMP manufacturing operations, product quality, and reliable plant performance.

How you will contribute:

  • Execute calibration, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and diagnostic activities for instrumentation, measurement, and control systems to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable equipment performance.
  • Execute and maintain site metrology programs in accordance with approved procedures, quality systems, and regulatory requirements, ensuring measurement and test equipment remains accurate, traceable, within tolerance, and fit for intended use.
  • Respond to alarms, abnormal conditions, and non-routine equipment or utility events by assessing priorities, communicating potential impacts, coordinating resources, escalating issues, and documenting actions to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Monitor, maintain, and support instrumentation, control systems, process equipment, and critical utilities to ensure reliable performance, continuous plant readiness, and timely resolution of equipment deviations.
  • Perform all work in accordance with site safety requirements, current GMP (cGMP) standards, and regulatory expectations, including completing hazard assessments, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and following approved procedures.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation, including calibration records, work orders, logbooks, maintenance activities, alarm and event reports, investigations, and other GMP records required to support data integrity, product quality, and audit readiness.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Validation, contractors, vendors, and equipment manufacturers to troubleshoot issues, improve reliability, and support commissioning and qualification activities, ensuring work is completed safely, compliantly, and right-first-time.
  • Oversee contractor activities within assigned areas, ensuring compliance with site procedures, safety requirements, and quality expectations.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource for instrumentation and metrology, providing technical guidance, mentoring, training, and knowledge transfer to technicians, contractors, and cross-functional teams while promoting accountability and high standards of workmanship.
  • Identify and support reliability and continuous improvement initiatives using equipment history, calibration data, and operational performance trends to improve measurement accuracy, strengthen compliance, optimize maintenance strategies, reduce risk, and enhance equipment reliability.

What you bring to Takeda:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 4–8 years of relevant experience required. A technical certification, associate degree, military technical training, or equivalent technical education in a related field is preferred, with 3 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of instrumentation and metrology principles, including calibration techniques, measurement accuracy, and system reliability within GMP manufacturing environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills, with the ability to independently resolve complex instrumentation, electrical, and control system issues with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with control systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and associated instrumentation, as well as preventive and corrective maintenance practices and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation, including P&IDs, equipment drawings, technical manuals, and related engineering documents, while maintaining strict adherence to cGMP, data integrity, and documentation requirements.
  • Strong digital literacy, attention to detail, ownership, and accountability, with the ability to use electronic business systems supporting procurement, safety, maintenance, and quality management activities.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and technical leadership skills, with the ability to guide peers and contractors, support knowledge transfer, and influence cross-functional stakeholders. Ability to meet physical requirements, including wearing PPE and gowning for pharmaceutical manufacturing areas, lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, climbing ladders, working from platforms, bending or stooping, handling approved site chemicals, and traveling or working across Massachusetts Bio Ops facilities as required.

Important Considerations

At Takeda, our patients rely on us to deliver quality products. As a result, we must follow strict rules in our manufacturing facilities to ensure we are not endangering the quality of the product. In this role, you may:

  • Work in a controlled environment requiring special gowning and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. This may include additional hearing protection for loud areas.
  • Need to remove all make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish and/or artificial fingernails while in the manufacturing environment.
  • Work in a cold, wet environment.
  • Work multiple shifts, including weekends, or be asked to work supplemental hours, as necessary.
  • Work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and Celite that may require respiratory protection.

This is an on-site role in Lexington, Massachusetts, required to support GMP manufacturing operations, plant readiness, and shift coverage needs.
