About the role
Original posting provided by Citi
Citi is looking for a Digital Software Engineer to lead digital architecture strategy across one of the world's most consequential financial technology environments. In this role, you will set the technical direction for Citi's Digital team, shaping the design of reliable, scalable, and high-performance platforms that directly influence business outcomes across multiple lines of business. You will operate at the intersection of engineering leadership and strategic decision-making, working independently to solve complex architectural challenges while mentoring the next generation of engineering talent.
Responsibilities
Define and own the technical architecture strategy for Citi's Digital engineering team, ensuring alignment with enterprise technology direction and long-term business goals.
Design scalable, secure, and high-performance systems and services, making deliberate architectural trade-offs that balance immediate engineering needs with strategic outcomes.
Lead architecture design reviews, identify reusable patterns across the organisation, and drive system enhancements that enable engineering teams to ship new products with speed and confidence.
Guide and mentor engineers across seniority levels, acting as a technical coach and trusted advisor who raises the quality and consistency of engineering output across teams.
Evaluate emerging technologies and engage with external vendors to identify innovative solutions, translating market insights into actionable improvements for Citi's platforms.
Build and analyse delivery metrics that measure engineering and operational excellence, using data to identify gaps and steer both tactical and strategic priorities.
Represent Citi's engineering capability externally through conference speaking, publications, and industry engagement, strengthening the team's profile in the broader technology community.
Identify and manage technical and business risk proactively, escalating issues with transparency and ensuring engineering decisions uphold compliance and ethical standards.
Required Qualifications & Skills
10 or more years of experience in an enterprise architecture role, with deep subject matter expertise in one or more technology domains.
Demonstrated ability to architect and deliver secure, performant, and scalable solutions across cloud platforms including AWS, Pivotal Cloud Foundry, and Akamai.
Hands-on expertise with web and mobile frameworks including Angular and iOS and Android native development.
Ability to work independently at a senior level, making high-impact architectural decisions without requiring day-to-day guidance from more senior leaders.
Track record of leading cross-functional technical discussions with product, programme, and engineering stakeholders to align on design decisions and delivery approaches.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant technical discipline.
Beneficial Skills & Qualifications
Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
Experience engaging with and evaluating external technology vendors to inform architectural decisions at an enterprise scale.
Active participation in the technology community through conference speaking, user group leadership, or published technical writing.
