Overview:
Mastercard’s Business Experimentation and Optimization (BE&O) teams within the Services organization is seeking a technically strong Software Engineer II to help design, build, and evolve a next-generation experimentation platform that enables organizations around the world to make smarter, data-driven decisions.
In this role, you will contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from architecture and system design through implementation, testing, and continuous improvement. You will build scalable, cloud-native applications, APIs, and data-processing capabilities using technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, TypeScript, React, Databricks, and Spark, with cloud platforms including AWS and Azure.
The Business Experimentation and Optimization (BE&O) is building industry-leading software that empowers business users around the world to make data-driven decisions through advanced analytics and experimentation. As we expand our product offerings and modernize our technology stack, we are reimagining how we deliver scalable, cloud-native solutions to our clients.
Our teams are small, agile, and empowered to choose the processes that work best for their goals. Every engineer contributes to the full development lifecycle, from ideation and design to implementation and testing, fostering a culture of ownership, innovation, and continuous improvement.
This is a hybrid role based in Arlington, VA, requiring three days per week onsite.

Role:
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable full-stack applications across frontend, backend, API, and data-processing layers using technologies such as Java/Spring Boot, TypeScript, and React.
• Build and enhance scalable services and APIs that support experimentation, analytics, and data-driven decision-making.
• Develop and optimize data-intensive applications using Databricks, Spark, and related technologies to process, transform, and serve large-scale datasets efficiently.
• Contribute to architecture and system design, evaluating technical tradeoffs and helping deliver solutions that are scalable, reliable, secure, and maintainable.
• Build innovative software products that help global businesses generate insights, test ideas, and make better decisions through experimentation.
• Translate business and product requirements into well-designed technical solutions in partnership with Product, Data Engineering, QA, and other stakeholders.
• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code while applying strong engineering practices across development, testing, code reviews, and deployment.
• Identify and resolve performance, scalability, and reliability challenges across applications, APIs, services, and data-processing workloads.
• Participate in the full development lifecycle, from technical discovery and design through implementation, testing, production support, and continuous improvement.
• Contribute to a culture of engineering excellence by sharing knowledge, supporting teammates, and helping improve development practices and developer productivity.
• Stay current with emerging technologies and engineering practices, identifying opportunities to improve the platform’s capabilities, scalability, and overall quality.

All About You:
• Experience as a Software Engineer building and supporting full-stack applications in a modern software development environment.
• Hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot, including developing backend services, APIs, and application components.
• Experience with modern frontend technologies such as TypeScript and React.
• Experience or familiarity with Databricks, Apache Spark, or PySpark, particularly for data processing, analytics, or data-intensive applications, is highly desirable.
• Strong foundation in object-oriented programming, API development, software design, and engineering best practices.
• Understanding of scalable and distributed systems, including considerations around performance, reliability, maintainability, and efficient data processing.
• Ability to work across the application, service, and data layers, understanding how different components come together to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down complex technical challenges, evaluate tradeoffs, and develop effective solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to write clean, maintainable, testable code and contribute effectively to code reviews and quality-focused development practices.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with Product, Data Engineering, QA, and other technical and business stakeholders.
• Curious and adaptable, with a growth mindset and willingness to learn new technologies, explore unfamiliar problems, and take on increasing levels of responsibility.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related STEM discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

In line with Mastercard’s total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role. The base salary offered may vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
