The Head of Strategic Portfolio Construction position is a new key role within State Street Investment Managements’ Investment Solutions Group (ISG). You will report to Head of Research for ISG and Fixed Income and work alongside the global research, portfolio management, and strategy teams.
ISG is a $500+ Billion AUM multi-asset team that engages in a wide variety of multi asset activities across our global client base. This role will be responsible for leading research for strategic asset allocation (SAA) activities globally and across multiple channels, including model portfolios for wealth, target date funds, defined benefit plans, endowments & foundations, OCIO, sovereign wealth funds, etc. Your main objective is to establish and facilitate global consistency of architecture and analytical principles behind ISG SAA, while identifying and integrating appropriate discretionary elements that allow practical, channel- and region-specific implementation.
You will work with ISG Head of Research and subject matter experts on the portfolio management and strategy sides to achieve your objective. You will also oversee and manage a small team of research analysts.
You will own and oversee further development of ISG’s proprietary SAA tools. You will also collaborate with ISG colleagues to vet and rationalize vended tools and analytics that are utilized in SAA processes across the organization to ensure fit and coherence with ISG SAA architecture, as designed.
You will also take ownership of SSIM’s capital market assumptions process. CMA development is collaborative with the portfolio management and strategy teams, but CMA production will be happening within your team.
The role will be based in Boston or Bangalore.
As the Head of Strategic Portfolio Construction, you will drive the following activities:
Research Agenda
- Articulate our broad strategic portfolio construction philosophy and analytical principles.
- Define SAA methodology and process, by channel, taking care to explicitly separate systematic and discretionary elements and incorporate appropriate guardrails on both.
- Define and include robust portfolio optimization elements into SAA analytics and process (robust covariance estimates, factor structure, uncertainty sets, worst-case thinking, etc.).
- Glidepath fundamentals and customization methodologies (for both DB and DC).
- Enable efficient alternative investment integration into SAA.
Model Ownership
- SSIM’s proprietary strategic portfolio construction tools.
- Capital Market Assumptions.
Thought Leadership and Client Interaction
- Meet with clients and consultants as required
- Create thought leadership content, as needed
Education & Preferred Qualifications:
- 10+ years of financial services experience including multi-asset or alternative investments portfolio construction.
- Practical experience in portfolio optimization and multi-asset modeling.
- Master’s or PhD degree in a STEM discipline is strongly preferred.
Skills that will help you succeed in this role:
- Ability to create change and innovate, with a strategic mindset
- Deep understanding of multi-asset and/or alternative investments space
- Excellent quantitative research and modeling skills, from mathematical foundations to practical implementation
- Being an effective communicator in written and verbal formats
- Ability to collaborate and drive execution
- Familiarity with key elements of modern application development (object-oriented architecture, R/Python, SQL, GitHub, AI-augmented programming, user support, etc.)
- Practical experience is AI-augmented or AI Agentic workflow transformation
- Proven management and talent development abilities
Salary Range:
$170,000 - $282,500 AnnualThe range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
