Job Description

Description

Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a highly motivated Senior Engineer, Systems Design to join our engineering team as a Systems Integrator supporting a diverse portfolio of life-science instrumentation and technology development projects. Depending on project assignment, the role may support platforms such as PCR instruments, cell and gene therapy systems, imaging systems, and other multidisciplinary products. This role focuses on system-level integration and hands-on engineering testing—bringing hardware, software, firmware and other subsystems together, understanding how they interact, identifying integration risks and issues, and helping the team establish a stable and reliable integrated system. We do not expect candidates to be experts in every technology or product domain. We are looking for engineers with strong systems thinking, technical curiosity and learning agility who are willing to develop new domain knowledge as projects evolve. Hands-on engineering capability is essential for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute system integration activities for assigned projects, bringing together multidisciplinary subsystems into controlled and reproducible system configurations.
  • Perform hands-on engineering testing on instruments, prototypes and subsystems to support feasibility studies, proof-of-concept work, integration checkout, troubleshooting and sustaining investigations.
  • Evaluate subsystem interfaces and interactions across areas such as mechanical, electrical, optical, fluidic, thermal, firmware and software domains, depending on the assigned product.
  • Exercise integrated system workflows and identify interface, timing, performance, configuration and cross-subsystem issues that may not be apparent during standalone subsystem testing.
  • Lead structured troubleshooting and root-cause investigations by reproducing, isolating and characterizing issues and coordinating resolution with appropriate technical owners.
  • Develop or contribute to engineering test approaches, test methods, acceptance criteria and integration coverage based on technical risks and system behavior.
  • Analyze experimental and test data using appropriate engineering, statistical and data-analysis techniques; translate results into clear conclusions and technical recommendations.
  • Support feasibility studies and proof-of-concept experiments to evaluate new technologies, design concepts, critical parameters and interface assumptions.
  • Identify system-level and integration risks and support risk-retirement activities, including integration-impact assessments for sustaining design changes where applicable.
  • Maintain appropriate records of system configuration, test results, open issues, known limitations and residual risks, and support readiness handoff to downstream verification and validation activities.
  • Collaborate across Systems Engineering, technical leads, subsystem designers, Hardware/Software/Embedded Test, V&V, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing and Service teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Biomedical, Bioengineering, or another relevant engineering/scientific discipline.
  • Typically 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, integration engineering, design engineering, test engineering or multidisciplinary product development.
  • Demonstrated hands-on engineering and test experience with physical products, prototypes, laboratory equipment, instruments or complex electromechanical systems.
  • Strong systems thinking with the ability to understand interactions, dependencies and failure mechanisms across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Systems integration experience is preferred; candidates without direct integration experience should demonstrate strong test experience, technical curiosity and the ability and willingness to learn systems integration on the job.
  • Strong test-engineering fundamentals, including experimental design, test-method development, data collection, data analysis, statistical interpretation, troubleshooting and technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving ability, including structured root-cause analysis and technical risk assessment.
  • Working knowledge of product-development and systems-engineering practices such as requirements, interfaces, traceability, design controls and verification concepts.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings clearly and work effectively with multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams.

Preferred: Experience with thermal design, thermal analysis or thermal testing, and/or experience developing or testing life-science, laboratory, analytical or medical instrumentation. Previous exposure to PCR, cell and gene therapy, imaging or related technologies is advantageous but not required.
