The Senior Stationary Engineer provides senior-level technical expertise, operational support, and leadership for the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of the facility’s power plant, building systems, utilities, and associated equipment.
The position is responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing critical facility systems in accordance with Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) requirements, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards, and site procedures.
The Senior Stationary Engineer also serves as a technical resource to Stationary Engineers, maintenance personnel, contractors, Production, and other site stakeholders, providing guidance on complex equipment issues, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities.
Day in the Life:
- Perform senior-level operational and maintenance duties for the facility's guarded power plant in accordance with applicable Ontario legislation, TSSA requirements, site procedures, and operating standards.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to Stationary Engineers, maintenance personnel, and operations staff regarding the safe and reliable operation of power plant, utility, HVAC, and building systems.
- Operate, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot boilers, compressors, HVAC systems, pumps, dust collectors, air-handling equipment, and associated auxiliary equipment.
- Monitor and adjust environmental systems to maintain required temperature, relative humidity, differential pressure, and other controlled environmental parameters in accordance with GMP specifications and manufacturing requirements.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting of the Building Automation System (BAS) and associated controls, sensors, instrumentation, and mechanical systems related to environmental and facility performance.
- Diagnose equipment and system failures, identify root causes, and coordinate or perform appropriate corrective actions to minimize operational downtime.
- Repair, rebuild, modify, and install facility and utility equipment while ensuring work complies with applicable codes, engineering requirements, manufacturer specifications, and site procedures.
- Perform and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance on facility-related equipment in accordance with the site's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) program.
- Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain the Purified Water System, including completion and review of required operational logs and documentation.
- Perform required boiler-water testing, chemical monitoring, and associated documentation in accordance with applicable TSSA requirements and site operating procedures.
- Review equipment operating conditions, trends, alarms, and maintenance history to identify potential failures and opportunities to improve equipment reliability and performance.
- Provide technical support and training to operators and maintenance personnel on equipment operation, troubleshooting, safety, and maintenance practices.
- Work collaboratively with Group Leaders, Production Supervisors, Engineering, Quality, and Maintenance personnel to coordinate equipment downtime and ensure preventative maintenance is completed within established timeframes.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance activities to minimize disruption to manufacturing operations while ensuring equipment remains safe, reliable, and compliant.
- Maintain accurate and complete maintenance, operational, testing, and equipment records in accordance with GMP documentation requirements and site procedures.
- Provide technical input into equipment modifications, upgrades, commissioning activities, capital projects, and facility improvement initiatives.
- Participate in equipment commissioning, qualification, start-up, shutdown, and return-to-service activities as required.
- Lead or actively participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA), deviation investigations, equipment failure investigations, corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and continuous improvement initiatives related to facility and utility systems.
- Participate in operational meetings, daily RAPIDs, maintenance planning meetings, EHS initiatives, and other cross-functional activities as required.
- Coordinate and oversee outside contractors performing maintenance, repairs, inspections, testing, and installation work on facility and utility equipment.
- Verify contractor work is completed safely and in accordance with site requirements, applicable regulations, permits, specifications, and established scope of work.
- Support regulatory, quality, safety, and internal inspections or audits by providing technical information and equipment documentation as required.
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, energy efficiency, operational effectiveness, preventative maintenance programs, and facility performance.
- Maintain a safe working environment, comply with applicable EHS requirements, and promptly identify and report unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, and potential hazards.
- Provide technical guidance during abnormal operating conditions, equipment failures, utility interruptions, and other facility-related emergencies.
- Perform alternating or rotating shift work as required and provide support during scheduled maintenance shutdowns, emergency repairs, and other operational requirements.

Education:
- High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate required.
- College diploma/certificate in Power Engineering, Stationary Engineering, Building Systems, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
- Valid Ontario Operating Engineer/Stationary Engineer certification appropriate to the classification and responsibilities of the plant, with a minimum 4th Class certification required.
- Higher-class Operating Engineer certification is considered an asset.
- Ontario Certificate of Qualification in an applicable skilled trade is considered an asset.
- Must maintain all licences, certificates, and qualifications required to perform assigned duties in accordance with applicable Ontario regulatory requirements.
Experience:
- Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in stationary engineering, power plant operations, utilities, facilities maintenance, or a related industrial environment, including significant experience operating and troubleshooting complex mechanical and building systems.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a controlled, regulated, GMP, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, chemical, or similarly regulated manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting boilers, HVAC systems, compressors, pumps, BAS controls, water systems, instrumentation, and associated facility equipment, including preventative maintenance, equipment reliability, and root cause investigations.
- Experience coordinating contractors, maintenance activities, shutdowns, and equipment downtime, while providing technical guidance, coaching, and training to operations and maintenance personnel.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, mechanical and electrical drawings, equipment schematics, technical manuals, and specifications.

Strong knowledge of stationary engineering and power plant operating practices applicable in Ontario, including safe operation of boilers, HVAC systems, compressed air systems, water systems, and associated facility utilities. Working knowledge of TSSA requirements and applicable Ontario regulations, codes, and standards, combined with a strong understanding of GMP requirements and documentation practices within a regulated manufacturing environment. Demonstrated advanced mechanical troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess equipment and system issues, determine appropriate corrective actions, and escalate critical issues when required. Strong organizational, maintenance planning, and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple operational and maintenance requirements effectively. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, guidance, training, and mentorship while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exercise sound technical judgment, and make timely decisions in support of safe and reliable facility operations. Physical Requirements:
Position requires ordinary ambulatory skills and physical coordination sufficient to move about manufacturing/office locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch periodically for prolonged periods of time; manipulation (lift, carry, move) of light to medium weights of up to 40 pounds; arm, hand and finger dexterity; visual acuity to operate equipment, and read materials for prolonged periods of time; ability to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear for prolonged periods of time. Usually in a comfortable environment but with regular exposure to factors causing moderate physical discomfort from such things as dust, loud noise, bright lights, fumes, or odour. Use of Personal Protective equipment is required and may include any of the following: safety glasses, safety shoes, lab coat, gloves, hair net, beard cover, safety apron, respirator.
