Principal, Public Policy

Work hard, have fun and make history with Amazon Public Policy. Amazon is seeking a Principal, Public Policy to create and execute state and local public policy objectives in Massachusetts and several Northeastern states. Like our business interests, our policy issues are broad, forward thinking, and driven by what is best for our customers. The Principal will engage on state legislation, work with outside consultants, and partner with trade associations. They will also support local government outreach and establish relationships with public officials in communities where Amazon operates. This role will attend policymaker conferences and build positive, lasting relationships. Understanding the big picture, connecting the dots, and creating engagement strategies will be essential to success in this role. This position reports to the Vice President, State and Local Public Policy, and is based in Boston, Massachusetts.

Key job responsibilities
• Work collaboratively with our public policy, communications, legal, and business teams to ensure alignment between business priorities and public policy goals.
• Assess and anticipate public policy matters and develop policy positions and strategies.
• Oversee and execute external advocacy efforts and key initiatives.
• Build positive relationships with state and local policymakers.
• Build and manage relationships with trade associations, think tanks, and policymaker organizations.
• An ability and desire to travel is required.


A day in the life
You will monitor and analyze state and local public policy developments across Massachusetts and the Northeast, connecting legislative and regulatory activity to Amazon's business priorities. You will develop policy positions and strategies, engage directly with policymakers and their staff, and represent Amazon at policymaker conferences and industry events. You will partner with outside consultants and trade associations to advance shared objectives, and coordinate closely with communications, legal, and business teams to keep advocacy aligned with company priorities.

About the team
This role sits within the State and Local Public Policy team and reports to the Vice President, State and Local Public Policy. The team works collaboratively across public policy, communications, legal, and multiple business partners to ensure alignment between business priorities and public policy goals. As a Principal individual contributor, you will operate as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert, leading engagements cross functionally without direct people management responsibilities.

Basic Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree or above in a relevant discipline (e.g. Law, Political Science, Public Policy, Public Affairs, Economic Development)
- At least 12 years of relevant public policy experience and a keen working understanding of the US state and local policymaking process and government relations.

Preferred Qualifications

- J.D., or Master's degree
- Experience in written and oral communication, including the ability to communicate with all levels in the organization (technical, business, executive)
- Highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality, and integrity, with a strong professional reputation in the industry.
- Proven track record of leading cross functionally.
- Ability to understand how legislative and regulatory proposals could affect corporate operations, identify business implications, recommend external engagements, and synthesize findings in documents for internal customers.
- Prior experience navigating steep learning curves, and the ability to communicate complex information to a wide variety of audiences.
- Ability to influence, negotiate with, and persuade others.
- Flexibility, strong judgment and decision making skills, and political acumen.
- Demonstrated ability to build and foster effective relationships and networks, including with trade associations.

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
