Based in Austin TX, this role will serve as Citi’s Republican West Region lobbyist within the U.S. Government Affairs (USGA) team. The role is responsible for managing public policy and political relationships with key government officials across several key states and localities. Reporting to the state and local government team lead, the role works closely with the team lead, USGA colleagues, and business partners (e.g., in-region site leaders) to advance Citi’s engagement with policymakers who shape the firm’s operating policy environment by executing high-impact engagement strategies aligned with Citi’s government affairs priorities and enterprise objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the primary advocate of Citi’s public policy interests with the government officials shaping public policy impacting Citi in the portfolio region, by lobbying to achieve favorable policy outcomes and managing political engagement in a portfolio of Republican states in the West with a primary focus on Texas. Includes:
- Identify, analyze, prioritize, and regularly communicate issues and implications
- Coordinate on policy issues and advocacy with key internal USGA partners to ensure policy issues are appropriately escalated to lines of business.
- Develop, in coordination with team lead, a strategic engagement plan to address prioritized issues with key policymakers
- Lead plan execution by engaging with portfolio government officials, trade associations, and consultants in the portfolio region
Execute strategic engagement and meeting plans that strengthen relationships between senior Citi business leaders and government officials in the portfolio region, both individually and with senior Citi GA and business executives.
Build and strengthen productive relationships with policymakers, with a focus on Citi site locations in the region.
Partner closely with USGA colleagues to advance political and policy objectives
Manage Citi’s engagement in relevant trade associations and leverage consultants to advance engagement and lobbying goals as needed.
Be a value-added resource to colleagues and internal business partners, providing insight and guidance on political and policy developments in the portfolio region.
Represent Citi in public fora and in meetings with government officials, including at third-party convenings, political gatherings and conferences.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
Minimum 7 years of experience in government relations or related field, including in government, a major corporation, trade association, or other business organization
Prefer experience collaborating with teams of government affairs professionals
Prefer experience working on financial services public policy
Strong existing relationships with government officials in Texas
Experience coordinating closely to advance advocacy objectives with coalitions of peers, external consultants and partners including trade associations and political organizations
Ability to travel over 50% of time between multiple jurisdictions
Competencies
Public Policy and Political Insights and Business Acumen. Strong understanding of how government actions impact business decisions. Significant knowledge of the intersection of U.S. state and federal political trends and their impact on financial services policy. Demonstrated ability to translate political dynamics into effective government affairs engagement strategy.
Leadership: Team player able to build trusted relationships with senior-level policymakers and business partners. Experience with building, coordinating and engaging colleagues and networks across geographies and functions. Can interact and communicate effectively and comfortably with a wide range of audiences.
Results Orientation: Self-motivated, strategic, outcomes-focused professional able to manage multiple priorities, operate effectively in ambiguity, and deliver high-quality work with limited supervision while partnering closely with senior leadership. Able to think both strategically and tactically to achieve government affairs policy advocacy outcomes.
