Overview

Windows + Devices powers experiences for over a billion users worldwide, building the platforms and products that create magical experiences across Microsoft and leading the Windows and Surface products through deep partnership across the company and with OEM partners. The Windows Engineering System is the backbone that lets Windows engineers design, code, build, validate, and ship at massive scale, securely and with high quality.

The Build Orchestration Team operates the services that turn Windows source into shipped builds. We orchestrate nightly official builds across hundreds of active branches, run continuous integration validation on every pull request, and deliver the resulting builds.

At this scale, small improvements have broad impact. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will build and evolve distributed systems that improve build speed, reliability, and cost efficiency, while adopting AI technologies to accelerate engineering, operations, and decision-making across one of the world’s largest engineering systems.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Build Orchestration & Scheduling: Design and operate services that schedule, prioritize, execute, and recover Windows builds across hundreds of branches and pull requests, including the branch onboarding and build configuration that define how each branch builds.
  • Continuous Integration: Own CI and pull request validation for the Windows codebase.
  • Artifacts & Symbols: Deliver build outputs, symbols, drops to downstream teams and release pipelines, and optimize indexing, caching, and artifact management for speed and reliability.
  • Infrastructure & Capacity: Manage build compute, machine lifecycles, autoscaling and capacity planning.
  • Developer Experience (UI/UX): Build and modernize the web experiences Windows engineers rely on daily build status and reporting, build controls, queue visibility, and outage communication.
  • AI Adoption & Automation: Evaluate and apply AI technologies to improve developer productivity, automate operational workflows, accelerate incident diagnosis, and optimize build scheduling and capacity.
  • Service Health: Participate in on-call, lead incident response and root-cause analysis, and improve telemetry and alerting.
  • Mentor other engineers and raise the technical bar across the team.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience.
    • OR Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years technical engineering experience.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience operating production services with on-call or DRI responsibility, including incident response, postmortems, and SLO-driven reliability work.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps (ADO) pipelines and CI/CD automation.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure.
  • Comfortable working with C# and Microsoft technologies.
  • Experience with build systems and developer productivity infrastructure (MSBuild, BuildXL, Bazel, or similar), distributed build execution, or distributed caching.
  • Experience with large-scale telemetry and query systems (Kusto/KQL, Azure Data Explorer, Application Insights) for diagnosing service and pipeline health.
  • Track record of measurably improving engineering system throughput, reliability, or developer productivity for a large engineering organization.
  • Self-driven and passionate about developer productivity, with excellent communication skills and customer-oriented problem-solving abilities.
