About the role
Original posting provided by amazon
The agencies that protect the homeland, enforce federal law, and move people and goods across the country are all racing to modernize and adopting generative AI for missions that range from border security to air traffic control. This role puts you at the center of that transformation, leading a team of Solutions Architects who are designing the technical future of these missions on AWS.
As Manager of Solutions Architecture for Homeland Security, Enforcement, and Transportation, you will lead a team of architects serving the Department of Homeland Security and its component agencies, the Department of Justice, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of Transportation, Amtrak, and the U.S. Postal Service. Your team's work spans border security and immigration systems, air traffic control modernization, mainframe-to-cloud cutovers, generative AI adoption for federal prosecutors, and enterprise migrations that touch hundreds of thousands of federal employees. You will own the technical strategy, pipeline development, and talent growth for three of the fastest-moving segments in AWS Federal Civilian.
Why This Role, Why Now
The opportunity in front of these accounts is accelerating, not plateauing:
Generative AI is unlocking new workloads. This role exists to convert that momentum into durable growth. You will take ownership of these segments, accelerate customer deployments, and develop a team that sustains this trajectory into 2027 and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, coach, and develop a team of Solutions Architects spanning homeland security, federal law enforcement, and transportation agencies — setting technical direction, running regular one-on-ones, and building promotion-ready talent at every level.
Own segment-level pipeline strategy and monthly business reviews, identifying gaps early and driving targeted outreach to replace lost opportunities and expand coverage across under-penetrated accounts.
Architect and execute the generative AI adoption roadmap for all three segments — converting early pilots into production workloads and removing the specific technical and procurement barriers slowing adoption in key agencies.
Serve as the escalation point and competitive strategist for your portfolio, engaging directly with agency CIOs and chief data officers to defend existing positions and win displacement opportunities against incumbent platforms.
Coordinate across account management, professional services, and specialist teams to ensure migration execution stays on track across more than a dozen active workload moves.
A Day in the Life
Your morning starts with a standup alongside your architects and account managers covering the portfolio. Mid-morning, you join an architect who is preparing for a customer whiteboard session on hybrid infrastructure for a customer site; you pressure-test the architecture, suggest a different approach to network segmentation, and make sure the cost model holds up.
After lunch, you shift to pipeline. You review the monthly numbers for your segments, flag an opportunity that has stalled in procurement, and draft talking points for an upcoming meeting with a chief data officer who is weighing cloud platforms. Late afternoon, you have a one-on-one with a mid-career architect: you review their promotion document together, identify a gap in their operational narrative, and agree on a stretch project that will close it. You end the day reviewing a migration runbook for a corrections agency cutover scheduled for next week, confirming that the partner team and your architect are aligned on the rollback plan.
About the Team
The Homeland, Enforcement, and Transportation Solutions Architecture team — part of AWS Federal Civilian — serves more than twenty agency accounts across three segments. The architects on this team design and deliver cloud solutions for some of the most complex and consequential federal missions in the country: border security, investigations, aviation safety, mail delivery logistics, and national transportation infrastructure.
What sets this team apart is the breadth and depth of the technical problems it tackles. In any given quarter, the team may be running a cloud platform, migrating a mainframe, deploying edge infrastructure, standing up generative AI tools, or executing a competitive transformation. The work is hands-on, high-stakes, and deeply technical.
The team operates out of Washington, DC, close to the headquarters of every agency it supports. Architects regularly visit customer sites for whiteboard sessions, proof-of-concept demos, and go-live support. They work side by side with account managers, professional services consultants, systems integrator partners, and AWS specialist teams. The culture favors direct feedback, shared ownership of outcomes, and investing in each other's growth — senior architects mentor newer teammates, and managers prioritize stretch assignments that build well-rounded technical leaders.
Looking ahead, the team is investing in three areas: scaling generative AI adoption across every account in the portfolio, expanding hybrid and edge deployments for agencies with on-premises requirements, and growing the management bench to sustain the organization's pace of growth. This role is central to all three.
