Role Summary
The Software Test Engineer II will ensure the quality and reliability of software applications that control analytical instruments such as mass spectrometers and electron microscopes. Join our team at Thermo Fisher Scientific as a Software Test Engineer II and contribute to ensuring the quality and reliability of our advanced software solutions. You'll work on sophisticated applications that control our analytical instruments, including mass spectrometers, electron microscopes, and other advanced scientific equipment. As part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team, you'll work with developers, scientists, and stakeholders to validate software that enables groundbreaking research and innovation. Your work will directly impact scientific discoveries in fields like cancer research, drug development, and semiconductor manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable Python-based test automation frameworks from the ground up.
- Build robust web application automation using Playwright with Python, following modern automation architecture and engineering practices.
- Develop reusable automation libraries, utilities, fixtures, test-data components, and framework capabilities that can be leveraged across applications and teams.
- Develop automated tests covering UI, API, integration, regression, and end-to-end workflows.
- Translate product requirements, test cases and acceptance criteria into reliable and maintainable automated test scenarios.
- Design automation solutions using appropriate framework architecture and design patterns such as Page Object Model (POM) and other reusable component-based approaches.
- Develop and maintain API automation for REST-based services, including request/response validation, authentication, data validation, and integration workflows.
- Integrate automated test suites into CI/CD pipelines to enable continuous testing and faster feedback to development teams.
- Analyze automation execution results, troubleshoot failures and flaky tests, perform root-cause analysis, and continuously improve framework reliability.
- Participate in automation code reviews and ensure adherence to Python coding standards, automation design principles, and software engineering best practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve test coverage, execution speed, framework scalability, maintainability, and overall automation effectiveness.
- Evaluate and apply AI-assisted and agentic engineering approaches for areas such as test generation, automation code development, test maintenance, failure analysis, debugging, and engineering productivity.
- Build reusable prompts, workflows, agents, skills, or automation utilities where AI can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of quality engineering activities.
- Collaborate with developers, product owners, quality engineers, DevOps engineers, and other cross-functional teams to drive quality throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Contribute to automation architecture, technical standards, reusable accelerators, engineering practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to other automation engineers based on experience and role expectations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 5–12 years of experience in software quality engineering, test automation, software development, or related engineering roles.
- Strong hands-on programming experience in Python, with the ability to write clean, modular, reusable, and maintainable production-quality automation code.
- Strong hands-on experience with Playwright automation using Python or significant experience with modern browser automation frameworks combined with the ability to work extensively with Playwright.
- Proven experience designing, developing, or significantly enhancing test automation frameworks.
- Strong understanding of automation framework architecture, reusable component design, object-oriented programming, and software design principles.
- Hands-on experience with Python testing frameworks such as pytest or equivalent frameworks.
- Experience developing automation for REST APIs and integration workflows.
- Experience with web technologies and browser automation concepts including DOM, XPath/CSS selectors, browser contexts, network interactions, asynchronous behavior, and cross-browser testing.
- Experience integrating automation suites with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins or equivalent platforms.
- Experience with Git, branching strategies, pull requests, and code-review practices.
- Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills with the ability to troubleshoot application, automation framework, test-data, and environment-related failures.
- Good understanding of Agile software development, software testing methodologies, and modern quality engineering practices.
