The Conditional Access team is at the forefront of Microsoft Security, helping organizations define and enforce their security posture by ensuring the right identities have the right access under the right conditions. As part of Microsoft Security, we protect people, organizations, applications, and emerging agentic workflows from evolving cyber threats while making secure access simple and effective at global scale. We are looking for a Software Engineer II to join our team. In this role you will build and operate highly available cloud services that power one of Microsoft’s most critical security platforms. You will work on large-scale distributed systems that secure billions of authentications and access decisions every day, helping customers balance security, productivity, and compliance in increasingly complex digital environments. Our team collaborates closely across Microsoft to deliver innovative identity and access management solutions, modernize security experiences, and enable organizations to adopt new technologies with confidence. Responsibilities
  • Design and develop large-scale distributed software services and solutions. 
  • Adhere to and drive modern software-engineering practices through design reviews. 
  • Perform system design across well-defined interfaces and multiple components, conduct code reviews, and use data/telemetry to make decisions. 
  • Develop best-in-class engineering by ensuring services and components are well-defined, modular, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored, and reusable. Improve test coverage, organize and implement integration tests, and resolve problem areas. 
  • Weigh testability, portability, reliability, and maintainability, and know when code is ready to ship. 
  • Collaborate leaders to contribute to cohesive, end-to-end customer experiences, focusing on customer/partner needs through a data-driven approach.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize automation, reliability, and monitoring for Live Site. 
  • Partner with product and engineering teammates to design and develop large-scale distributed software services and solutions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, Swift, Objective C, React, Java, Kotlin, C++, C#, or Python OR equivalent experience.

 

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, Swift, Objective C, React, Java, Kotlin, C++, C#, or Python * OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, Swift, Objective C, React, Java, Kotlin, C++, C#, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience designing, developing, or maintaining secure software systems, with applied knowledge of authentication, data protection, access control, and secure coding practices.
  • 2+ years of experience designing, building, and operating scalable, highly available cloud services or distributed systems on platforms such as Azure, AWS, GCP, or comparable cloud environments, with production ownership, CI/CD pipeline integration, and automated testing practices.
  • Experience building or integrating AI/ML-powered systems or workflows, including safe handling of model outputs, orchestration, or agent-based systems.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.
