Job Description

Position Summary:

The Senior Software Engineer will contribute to the design, development and continuous improvement of PC-based instrument control software for Scientific Instrument like Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) products and Mass Spectrometry, with a focus on delivering high-quality solutions that address customer and business needs. Working closely with cross-functional engineering teams, you will develop reliable and maintainable software that coordinates instrument subsystems, enables efficient product development and supports high-quality customer operation.

This position provides opportunities to participate throughout the product lifecycle, including concept evaluation, software development, system integration, verification, product enhancement and sustaining engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

Instrument Control Software

  • Design, develop and maintain PC-based instrument control software for SEM products.
  • Develop software that coordinates instrument subsystems including electron optics, detector electronics, high-voltage electronics, stage motion, vacuum and peripheral devices.
  • Implement software supporting instrument configuration, initialization, calibration, diagnostics and operational workflows.
  • Develop software components that enable robust communication between PC software, embedded controllers and hardware devices

Software Platform Development

  • Contribute to reusable software frameworks, common libraries and modular software components supporting scientific instrument development.
  • Develop software interfaces for subsystem integration and device communication.
  • Improve software maintainability, reliability and scalability through sound software engineering practices.
  • Participate in software architecture discussions and technology evaluations within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

System Integration

  • Collaborate with Electronics, Embedded Software, FPGA, Electron Optics, Mechanical Engineering and Systems Engineering teams during product development.
  • Support software integration with hardware prototypes and engineering builds.
  • Investigate software and system issues through debugging, testing and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Support software verification, validation and product release activities

Software Quality

  • Develop well-structured, maintainable and testable software.
  • Participate in code reviews, software documentation and continuous improvement activities.
  • Contribute to software development processes, coding standards and engineering best practices.
  • Support software maintenance and product enhancement throughout the product lifecycle

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Typically 8+ years of experience developing PC software for scientific instruments, or Medical Device meeting 21CFR compliance.
  • Strong proficiency in C# and object-oriented software design.
  • Strong understanding of multithreaded software development and concurrent programming.
  • Experience developing software that interfaces with hardware devices.
  • Experience with communication technologies such as TCP/IP, Ethernet, Serial, USB, CAN or similar industrial communication protocols.
  • Experience with software debugging, system integration and troubleshooting.
  • Experience using version control systems such as Git.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills within cross-functional engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Instrument control software for SEM, Mass Spectrometry, Chromatography, Spectroscopy or other scientific instrumentation.
  • Detector control, data acquisition
  • Hardware communication and device integration.
  • Motion control software.
  • Vacuum system control.
  • Calibration, diagnostics and service software.
  • Software frameworks for scientific instrumentation.
  • Windows desktop application development.
