Summary

Apple's Battery Engineering team is seeking an experienced FEA Engineer to play a critical role in the design, qualification, and manufacturing of battery systems that power Apple's portable electronic devices. In this position, your models and simulations will directly inform design decisions for nearly every battery Apple ships, impacting reliability, safety, manufacturing processes, and performance across the product portfolio.

Description

In this role, your work will directly influence the design and performance of battery systems in products used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. You will be at the center of Apple's battery innovation engine, enabling faster development cycles, improved product safety and reliability, and breakthrough performance.

Responsibilities

Develop high-fidelity finite element analyses to predict battery performance prior to physical prototyping
Deliver simulation insights that directly shape design decisions and qualification outcomes for shipping products
Validate model predictions against experimental data and iterate to improve model accuracy and reliability
Develop and implement advanced structural, mechanical, thermal, and electrochemical models at the forefront of battery simulation technology
Capture intricate design details, cell chemistry behavior, and load cases spanning multiple length and time scales
Build coupled multi-physics models that accurately represent the complex interactions within battery systems
Design and deploy automated, end-to-end workflows from geometry creation through validated results
Leverage agentic automation, surrogate modeling, reduced-order modeling, parameterized design of experiments (DOE), and job automation for rapid design exploration, calibration, and optimization
Scale simulation capabilities to support multiple concurrent product programs
Experimental Validation and Material Characterization
Design novel, non-standard test methods to calibrate material models and validate simulation predictions
Define instrumentation and measurement strategies that provide high-quality data for model validation

Minimum Qualifications

MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Applied Mechanics, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or similar
Experience with commercial finite element analysis software such as Abaqus
Experience with advanced simulation techniques such as nonlinear constitutive modeling and modeling of high speed events and large deformations
Experience programming in Python
Experience building, debugging, and calibrating finite element models

Preferred Qualifications

PhD and 10+ years relevant industry experience
Experience with coupled thermal-mechanical or electrochemical-mechanical modeling
Experience with LS-DYNA, ANSYS, or COMSOL
Exposure to physics-based machine learning methods for surrogate modeling or model order reduction
Custom solver development or user-defined material model implementation experience
Industry experience in battery mechanics, electrochemistry, or energy storage systems
Experience validating complex models against experimental data
Experience designing and executing physical tests for material characterization or model validation
Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) environments and version-controlled software development workflows
