As a Principal Product Manager in the Word Product Group, you will help shape the future of document creation, editing, review, and collaboration for millions of people worldwide. This role needs a PM who can quickly understand highly technical systems, partner deeply with engineering on features already in flight, and translate technical complexity into clear customer value and differentiated experiences. You will operate in ambiguous problem spaces, drive clarity for stakeholders, and bring a deep user-experience orientation to product decisions.

Responsibilities
  • Define and drive product direction for Word experiences that help people create, edit, review, and collaborate on documents with confidence. 

  • Develop working fluency in complex technical systems and architecture to make informed product decisions, unblock execution, and translate engineering complexity into clear customer value. 

  • Partner closely with engineering, design, research, data science, and partner teams to deliver features while balancing quality, scope, risk, customer value, and readiness across endpoints. 

  • Lead customer engagements by deeply understanding customer problems, connecting them to Word’s current and emerging solutions, and translating those learnings into product priorities. 

  • Drive customer awareness and adoption through partnership with the field, marketing, and social.  

  • Use customer learning, telemetry, and data insights to shape tradeoffs, determine appropriate product scope, align stakeholders, and define a clear cross-endpoint definition of done. 

  • Advance the future of Word collaboration by identifying opportunities that make document review, change understanding, and shared decision-making feel clearer, more trustworthy, and easier to act on. 



Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 8+ years experience in product/service/program management or software development
    • OR equivalent experience. 

Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
 
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 12+ years experience in product/service/program management or software development
    • OR equivalent experience. 
  • 8+ years experience taking a product, feature, or experience to market (e.g., design, addressing product market fit, and launch, internal tool/framework).
  • 6+ years experience improving product metrics for a product, feature, or experience in a market (e.g., growing customer base, expanding customer usage, avoiding customer churn).
  • 6+ years experience disrupting a market for a product, feature, or experience (e.g., competitive disruption, taking the place of an established competing product).

Product Management IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
