Key job responsibilities
- Drive the strategy and implementation of research and development tax credits, including identifying qualified research expenditures, performing wage-based and supply-based credit computations, and conducting four-part test analysis across Amazon's technology-driven business lines
- Analyze and document the tax impact of new business development, acquisitions, and changes in tax law on research and development credits and related incentives, working in partnership with our Tax Reporting team
- Build and maintain comprehensive documentation and substantiation packages that support our research and development credit claims and meet contemporaneous documentation standards for IRS review
- Provide technical review and support for research and development credit positions reflected in Amazon's income tax provision and federal income tax returns, and support US income tax audits by responding to IRS requests and defending credit positions
- Manage and develop internal tax professionals, coordinate external advisors and research and development credit study providers, and drive automation and process improvements for credit data collection, computation, documentation, and reporting
A day in the life
In this role, you'll focus on Amazon's research and development tax credit position under federal tax law. You might start your day reviewing qualified research expenditures across our software, hardware, devices, and robotics divisions, then transition to analyzing how a recent acquisition affects our credit strategy. You'll collaborate with engineering teams to understand their project work, partner with finance to determine the credit impact from projects, and coordinate with our tax reporting colleagues on documentation requirements. Throughout the week, you'll help build AI tools to analyze R&D opportunities and automate processes, mentor tax professionals on your team, work with external advisors on complex credit studies, and identify opportunities to streamline how we collect and process credit-related data. You may also provide technical support on adjacent federal incentives like green energy credits, and respond to IRS inquiries about our credit positions.
About the team
We are a collaborative group within Amazon's US Federal Tax Planning function dedicated to optimizing our tax position through strategic planning and technical expertise. Our team works across business operations, engineering, finance, and accounting to identify opportunities and implement solutions that benefit Amazon's diverse business lines. We're building a culture where tax professionals can grow their expertise, contribute meaningfully to the company's strategy, and work together to solve complex challenges. As we continue to expand our businesses globally, we're looking for leaders who can help us strengthen our processes, develop our team members, and navigate an evolving tax landscape with both technical rigor and collaborative problem-solving.
