Job Description
As a Senior Windows Server Engineer, you will build, implement, and maintain the Windows Server platform across a large-scale environment (3,000+ servers). You will execute the patching, imaging, deployment, and virtualization standards for the fleet — turning architecture and design into working, reliable infrastructure. This is a hands-on senior engineering role focused on Windows Server, not an endpoint/desktop or help-desk operations role. You will own implementation and complex troubleshooting, and serve as a strong technical contributor rather than the fleet-wide design authority.
Qualifications
- Implement and maintain the enterprise patching solution (SCCM/MECM or equivalent) across 3,000+ servers, including running patch cycles, monitoring compliance, and remediating failures
- Build and maintain Windows Server gold images against established baselines; test, validate, and publish image updates
- Execute standardized server deployments and provisioning workflows; ensure new builds conform to platform standards
- Operate and support server virtualization on Hyper-V (preferred) and/or VMware — VM provisioning, host maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Monitor and report on patch compliance against SLAs; drive remediation of non-compliant hosts
- Support vulnerability remediation by working from scanner output (Qualys, Tenable, Rapid7) and applying patches and hardening fixes
- Develop and maintain automation for patching, provisioning, configuration, and reporting using PowerShell
- Perform advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis on Windows Server issues across the fleet
- Support Active Directory-related server tasks (domain-join automation, GPO application, DNS) as they apply to server infrastructure
- Contribute to standards and documentation, and provide guidance to junior engineers and operations staff
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong hands-on experience administering Windows Server (2016/2019/2022 and newer) at scale
- Practical experience operating an enterprise patching/configuration tool such as SCCM/MECM (Current Branch) or comparable
- Experience building or maintaining Windows Server images and executing standardized deployments
- Working knowledge of virtualization: Hyper-V (preferred) and/or VMware vSphere — provisioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Proficient PowerShell scripting for automation and reporting; exposure to Infrastructure-as-Code or configuration management (DSC, Ansible, Terraform) is a plus
- Solid Active Directory, GPO, DNS, and Windows networking fundamentals
- Familiarity with vulnerability scanners (Qualys, Tenable, Rapid7) and security hardening baselines (CIS, DISA STIG)
General Skills & Competencies
- Self-directed and able to manage assigned workstreams with limited oversight
- Strong troubleshooting mindset and attention to detail under SLA pressure
- Clear written and verbal communication; able to document work and explain technical issues to peers and leadership
- Collaborative team contributor; mentors junior staff and shares knowledge
- Keeps current with Windows Server and virtualization technologies
Experience Required
- 6+ years in Windows Server infrastructure engineering, including hands-on work with enterprise patching, imaging, and virtualization at scale (hundreds to thousands of servers)
Certifications Preferred
- Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate (AZ-800/AZ-801)
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) — for hybrid/cloud environments
- VMware VCP-DCV or equivalent Hyper-V/virtualization credential
