Build distributed microservices that power critical financial systems as a Senior Software Engineer, Java Microservices at Citi. You will design, develop, and implement scalable backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, Kotlin, and MongoDB, applying modern engineering practices including Site Reliability Engineering principles and OpenTelemetry-based observability. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of complex technical challenges while mentoring other engineers and shaping how Citi's technology platforms serve global business needs.

 

Responsibilities:

• Design and build distributed microservices using Java, Spring Boot, and Kotlin to support scalable Citi application systems.

• Apply modern engineering and DevOps practices, including Site Reliability Engineering principles and OpenTelemetry-based observability, to strengthen development, deployment, and monitoring.

• Manage application data using MongoDB to support high-performing, reliable backend services.

• Lead feasibility studies, cost estimates, and technical planning for new and revised application systems.

• Analyze complex business and system processes against industry standards to recommend practical, scalable solutions.

• Consult with business users and technology teams to translate requirements into effective programming solutions.

• Implement security measures following deployment to protect system design and strengthen data integrity.

• Operate independently as a subject matter expert, mentoring junior engineers and advising senior stakeholders.

 

Required Qualifications & Skills:

• 5 to 8 years of experience in software development, systems analysis, or applications programming.

• Hands-on experience building backend systems using Java, Spring Boot, and Kotlin.

• Working knowledge of MongoDB and distributed microservices architecture.

• Experience with modern engineering and DevOps practices, including Site Reliability Engineering principles and OpenTelemetry for observability.

• Experience managing and delivering successful technology projects from concept to implementation.

• Ability to manage competing deadlines and adapt to shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

 

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications:

• Working knowledge of Python for scripting, automation, or tooling support within engineering workflows.
