Summary

AI represents a big opportunity to elevate Apple’s products and experiences for billions of people globally. We are looking for an Agentic Systems Engineer with deep expertise in systems architecture and applied machine learning to help build the next generation of autonomous, agentic workflows. You will be leveraging state-of-the-art Generative models to ship delightful products, services, and customer experiences for the iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, and iPad. The mission of Proactive Intelligence is to improve Apple platforms by better understanding, anticipating, and adapting to user behavior by using AI to build features that are well embedded into Apple platforms. Our team provides an opportunity to be part of an incredible engineering and research organization within Apple. The ideal candidate for this role will have industry experience bridging low-level operating system architectures with LLM-driven orchestration, designing secure execution harnesses, integrating complex API/UI interactions, and building the runtime infrastructure that allows foundation models to act seamlessly on the user's behalf. Working knowledge of daemon architecture, event routing, sandboxing, and prompt engineering will broaden your role and effectiveness in this position.

Description

As an Agentic Systems Engineer on our team, you will design and implement the low-level execution frameworks that securely bind foundation models to Apple’s UI and system APIs. You will bridge the gap between raw LLM reasoning and deterministic system execution, building the runtime loops that parse multi-modal model outputs into safe, reliable actions across macOS and iOS. Where necessary, you will work on integrating new perception pipelines and agentic tooling, ensuring that as our models grow more capable, they operate within an architecture that is unmistakably Apple: blazing fast, deeply integrated, and relentlessly private. You will communicate advanced architectural ideas to a focused team of engineers and researchers in the spirit of developing innovative tools that change the way users interact with their devices. You will work closely with other cross-functional teams (including CoreOS, UI Frameworks, Siri) to align messaging, contribute to roadmaps, and contribute software back into different repos for proper integration with core systems. You will write clean, maintainable, and production-quality code with appropriate documentation and tests. You will contribute to architecture decisions, design reviews, and peer code reviews!

Minimum Qualifications

Strong programming skills in Swift, Objective-C, and/or C++ with 10+ years of experience in system-level software engineering or OS integration.
B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience. A minimum of 10 years of experience in applied software engineering and/or product development.
Fundamental knowledge of modern operating system concepts (IPC, daemons, event routing, sandboxing).
Strong software engineering skills to create scalable and robust infrastructure that securely interfaces with LLMs and evaluation systems.
Proven ability to architect and debug complex, asynchronous systems: performing error analysis, and bridging high-level logic with low-level execution.

Preferred Qualifications

Hands-on experience with applied LLM integration, prompt engineering, and agentic orchestration patterns (e.g., tool calling, multi-turn reasoning loops).
Passionate about building Generative AI features and redefining human-computer interaction.
Creative, collaborative and project-focused with an ability to work hands-on in multi-functional teams.
Proficiency with Apple’s UI frameworks (UIKit, AppKit, SwiftUI) and an understanding of accessibility (AX) or UI automation technologies.
