At Thermo Fisher Scientific, our mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. Behind important scientific discoveries are sophisticated analytical instruments—and skilled engineers who keep those instruments performing reliably.
We're seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer III to provide dedicated, on-site technical support for advanced mass spectrometry (primarily) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems at a customer’s location in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In this role, you'll be more than someone who repairs instruments. You'll be a trusted technical partner to scientists and laboratory teams, solving challenging equipment problems, maximizing instrument uptime, and helping ensure critical scientific work continues with minimal disruption.
What makes this opportunity different? Rather than following a traditional travel-heavy field service schedule, you'll primarily support one customer’s location, allowing you to develop strong working relationships, gain familiarity with the laboratory's instrumentation, and take meaningful ownership of equipment reliability. Occasional support at nearby Cambridge customer sites will also be required.
What You'll Do
Solve complex technical challenges
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair sophisticated mass spectrometry.
- Investigate mechanical, electronic, vacuum, fluidic, and software-related problems to identify root causes and restore instrument performance.
- Perform instrument installations, upgrades, diagnostics, and performance verification.
Keep critical laboratory equipment running
- Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance to minimize instrument downtime and support reliable laboratory operations.
- Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend solutions that improve long-term instrument performance.
- Maintain accurate service documentation, equipment histories, and technical records in accordance with applicable procedures.
Become a trusted partner to scientists
- Work directly with scientists, laboratory personnel, and other customer stakeholders to understand instrument performance concerns and service priorities.
- Communicate technical findings, service progress, and repair recommendations clearly and professionally.
- Respond effectively to urgent service needs, balancing technical quality, safety, and customer expectations.
- Work independently at the primary customer site while collaborating with technical support teams and other service specialists when needed.
What Makes You a Strong Fit
We're looking for someone who enjoys understanding how sophisticated analytical instruments work, investigating challenging technical problems, and making a measurable difference in laboratory productivity.
Technical experience
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, or servicing mass spectrometry, LC-MS, HPLC/UHPLC, or comparable complex analytical laboratory instrumentation.
- Strong understanding of instrument hardware and supporting systems, including electronics, mechanical components, fluidics, vacuum technology, and instrument control software.
- Ability to systematically diagnose complex instrument failures, identify root causes, and verify that equipment is operating properly after service.
- Familiarity with laboratory data systems, instrument software, and associated technologies.
Professional strengths
- Confidence working independently and managing technical priorities in a customer laboratory environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly when explaining technical issues to scientists and laboratory personnel.
- A customer-focused approach with a commitment to responsive, high-quality service.
- Attention to detail when completing maintenance activities, service reports, and technical documentation.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with technical teams and customer stakeholders.
Education and experience
- Advanced degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
- A degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Physics, Life Sciences, or a related technical or scientific discipline is preferred.
- Experience supporting laboratory instrumentation in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, analytical testing, or regulated environments is advantageous.
- Experience with quality management systems and regulated laboratory procedures is preferred.
- Proficiency in English and a valid driver's license are required.
