Description

We are seeking an exceptional Senior Engineering Manager to lead the engineering organization responsible for Agentic AI and Intelligent Reasoning. This team is building the next generation of AI systems capable of understanding complex user intent, orchestrating multi-step reasoning, retrieving and synthesizing knowledge, and delivering deeply personalized, accurate, and trustworthy experiences. You will lead a world-class organization of machine learning engineers, software engineers, and applied scientists developing agentic AI frameworks, reasoning systems, planning engines, memory architectures, and orchestration platforms that enable Apple's AI experiences to solve increasingly sophisticated user problems while maintaining Apple's industry-leading standards for privacy, reliability, and user trust.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will define the vision, technical strategy, and execution roadmap for Apple's Agentic AI answer & knowledge platform, enabling Siri, Apple Intelligence, Spotlight, Safari, and future intelligent experiences to answer increasingly complex user questions through reasoning, planning, retrieval, and intelligent orchestration.
You will lead end-to-end engineering and applied research to build AI agents capable of understanding complex user goals, decomposing multi-intent requests, performing multi-hop reasoning across heterogeneous knowledge sources, executing long reasoning chains, conducting deep research, and synthesizing grounded answers that integrate world knowledge with users' personal context while preserving privacy.
Your organization will develop state-of-the-art agentic architectures that dynamically orchestrate large language models, retrieval systems, reasoning engines, planning modules, memory systems, structured knowledge, and external tools to deliver intelligent, context-aware experiences. These systems will support sophisticated workflows requiring iterative reasoning, evidence gathering, verification, contextual understanding, and personalized response generation.
You will drive innovations in planning, task decomposition, retrieval orchestration, long-context reasoning, memory management, tool use, agent collaboration, and adaptive execution to significantly improve answer relevance, factuality, freshness, completeness, and user satisfaction across Apple's AI ecosystem.
You will partner closely with foundation model, retrieval, knowledge, ranking, search, personalization, and product teams to develop scalable AI systems that intelligently combine user context, device context, trusted web information, structured knowledge, and Apple's ecosystem data while maintaining strict privacy guarantees through on-device intelligence and Private Cloud Compute.
You will also lead the development of robust evaluation frameworks, simulation environments, safety guardrails, reasoning benchmarks, observability systems, and continuous learning pipelines to measure and improve agent quality across complex reasoning, grounding, planning accuracy, factual consistency, personalization, and user experience.
As a senior engineering leader, you will build and mentor high-performing engineering managers and technical leaders, establish long-term organizational strategy, foster technical excellence, and successfully execute ambitious multi-year roadmaps that shape the future of AI across billions of Apple devices worldwide.

Minimum Qualifications

MS or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, or a related technical field.
8+ years of experience leading engineering organizations delivering large-scale AI, machine learning, or distributed systems in production.
Proven track record of delivering complex AI platforms from research through production at large scale.
Strong experience in large language models, conversational AI, intelligent agents, reasoning systems, or advanced machine learning platforms.
Demonstrated success leading cross-functional organizations and defining long-term technical strategy while executing complex engineering programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Deep expertise in agentic AI architectures, autonomous agents, reasoning systems, planning algorithms, tool use, memory architectures, multi-agent systems, and orchestration frameworks.
Strong engineering and R&D experience in large language models, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), long-context reasoning, chain-of-thought optimization, reinforcement learning for LLMs (RLHF, RLAIF), model alignment, and advanced context techniques.
Experience building systems for multi-intent understanding, multi-hop reasoning, deep research, evidence synthesis, complex workflow execution, and personalized AI experiences.
Experience designing scalable evaluation systems for reasoning quality, factuality, grounding, personalization, safety, agent reliability, and user experience.
Demonstrated ability to translate cutting-edge AI research into high-quality consumer products serving billions of users.
Excellent product vision, strategic thinking, and business acumen with the ability to balance long-term innovation with rapid execution.
Outstanding leadership, communication, and organizational skills with a passion for developing world-class engineering teams and fostering a culture of innovation and engineering excellence.

Pay & Benefits — Seattle, Washington, United States

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $238,300 and $357,500, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

The base pay range for this role is between $250,800 and $376,300, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
