The Windows Servicing and Delivery Packaging and Release Tools (PRT) team builds the services, frameworks, and automation that support the packaging, validation, and release of Windows software. Our work connects cloud infrastructure and engineering tools to help teams deliver software safely, reliably, and efficiently.
We are looking for a Software Engineer II to develop cloud services and release tooling, reduce manual work through automation, and improve the reliability and security of our systems. You will take ownership of defined features from requirements and design through implementation, testing, and operational readiness, collaborating with experienced engineers and partner teams. This role offers opportunities to deepen your cloud and distributed-systems expertise and apply AI-assisted development responsibly.
Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Work with internal customers and partner teams to understand requirements, evaluate design options, identify dependencies, and contribute to design documents and implementation plans. Communicate estimates, risks, and blockers early.
- Own implementation of defined features for cloud services, engineering frameworks, and release tooling. Write extensible, maintainable code independently within defined requirements, meeting agreed reliability, scalability, and performance requirements.
- Create and execute feature test strategies, build testable code, and improve automated coverage. Include regression, integration, and security tests covering expected behavior and negative cases, and work with partner teams on end-to-end validation and operational readiness.
- Apply secure-by-design practices to harden features and meet security, privacy, and compliance requirements throughout development and operations. Review feature and test code for correctness, coverage, diagnosability, maintainability, and security risks, following team standards.
- Use approved AI development tools across design, coding, testing, and debugging. Review and validate generated changes, protect sensitive information, and remain accountable for correctness, security, and maintainability.
- Improve build and deployment automation, reducing manual deployment steps where practical. Validate changes in production-like environments and support safe, monitored rollouts and rollback plans, following team review and approval processes.
- Implement logs, telemetry, and debugging tools to verify assumptions, monitor feature health, and investigate issues. Use data to improve reliability and performance while respecting privacy and least-privilege access.
- Participate in the team's on-call rotation, responding within service targets and following runbooks and escalation paths to mitigate incidents. Contribute to root-cause investigations, repair actions, and improvements that prevent recurrence
