The Opportunity
The Citi Commercial Bank Head of Digital Technology & Communications (DT&C) for UK, Europe, and Middle East & Africa (“MEA”) provides executive leadership across multiple teams of Relationship Managers (RMs), Team Leaders, and product specialists. The role requires an in-depth understanding of how the DT&C sub-function contributes to achieving the broader commercial, financial, and strategic objectives of the franchise.
The Head of DT&C must possess an advanced understanding of the digital technology, communications, media, software/SaaS, digital infrastructure, telecommunications, AI ecosystems and platform ecosystems, including direct competitors’ capabilities, market disruptions, VC/PE sponsorship models, and evolving capitalization structures.
Excellent communication skills are required to negotiate internally, often at a senior level. Some external communication/negotiation may be necessary. The person will determine the approach to implementing functional strategy and will be accountable for end results, budgeting, planning, policy formulation and contribution to future strategy of the business. The role has full management responsibility for multiple teams, including management of people, budget, and planning, to include duties such as performance evaluation, compensation, hiring, disciplinary actions and terminations and budget approval. The individual may be involved or responsible for diverse (cross-discipline) activities.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Business Expansion
- Set and execute the commercial growth agenda for the Digital Technology & Communications vertical across the UK, Europe, and MEA, fully aligned with regional and global CCB priorities.
- Shape the regional DT&C scorecard, actively contributing to regional planning, investment decisions, headcount allocation, and resource optimization at the CCB leadership table.
- Drive accelerated business expansion by broadening client penetration, capturing market share in high-growth technology sub-sectors, and scaling priority industry ecosystems (e.g., enterprise software, cloud infrastructure, fintech, digital media, and telecom).
- Leverage Citi’s worldwide network across c. 95 countries to capture inbound and outbound cross-border corridor flows, connecting regional tech clients with global opportunities in North America, LATAM, and APAC.
Client Leadership & Market Presence
- Serve as the senior external ambassador for CCB DT&C across the UK, Europe, and MEA, engaging with C-suite decision-makers (CEOs, CFOs, Founders), tech industry bodies, venture capital/private equity sponsors, and key ecosystem stakeholders.
- Sponsor and originate multi-product, high-value transactions spanning structured lending, recurring-revenue financing, global cash management, algorithmic FX, trade finance, and debt/equity capital markets.
- Lead teams of Relationship Managers in proactively anticipating client needs, designing tailored financial solutions, and structuring deals that balance risk and return.
P&L Ownership & Portfolio Management
- Hold comprehensive accountability for the regional DT&C P&L, ensuring rigorous pricing discipline, margin optimization, revenue growth, and capital efficiency (RoE/RoTCE).
- Oversee credit portfolio construction and origination standards across the region, ensuring alignment with institutional risk appetite and early identification of emerging credit issues.
- Act as Senior Sponsoring Officer and exercise commercial credit decision-making authority on key, complex, cross-border credit relationships, syndicated facilities, and leveraged capital structures.
Governance, Controls & Regulatory Interface
- Maintain an uncompromising control environment across all managed teams, ensuring strict adherence to Know Your Customer (KYC), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), sanctions, conduct rules, and operational resilience standards.
- Partner closely with Independent Risk, Compliance, and Country Citi Officers (CCOs) / Cluster Leaders to meet regional regulatory expectations and participate in key franchise governance processes.
- Safeguard Citigroup’s assets, reputation, and client trust by applying sound ethical judgment, establishing transparent escalation mechanisms, and enforcing personal and supervisory accountability.
Leadership, Talent Bench & Culture
- Lead and inspire multiple senior teams, including frontline bankers, team leaders, credit specialists, and industry analysts across diverse geographic markets.
- Build a deep, diverse leadership bench with proactive succession planning, continuous coaching, and a clear focus on attracting, developing, and retaining top-tier commercial banking talent.
- Foster an inclusive, high-performance environment characterized by client intensity, collaboration, accountability, and responsible growth.
Cross-Functional & Franchise Synergy
- Partner with Markets, TTS, Trade, Investment Banking and Wealth to deliver integrated, client centric solutions.
- Represent the DT&C vertical in UK, Europe & MEA and Global CCB leadership forums, influencing regional business strategy, risk appetite framework, and execution priorities.
AI Ecosystem
- Strategic Leadership & Business Expansion - Familiarity with the AI investment ecosystem — spanning LLM commercialisation, GPU/compute financing, and AI SaaS monetisation — to engage credibly with founders, CFOs, and VC/PE sponsors at the frontier of the sector.
- P&L Ownership & Portfolio Management - Ability to assess AI-specific client risk profiles, including revenue concentration in AI-integrated businesses, model obsolescence risk, and the disruptive impact of autonomous systems across cloud infrastructure, fintech, digital media, and enterprise software.
- Governance, Controls & Regulatory Interface - Awareness of the evolving AI regulatory landscape — including the EU AI Act and FCA guidance — to advise clients on compliance implications as they scale AI-driven business models across the UK, Europe, and MEA.
Development Value
- Direct opportunity to establish, scale, and manage a marquee industry vertical across major international markets with full P&L and operational ownership.
- Broadened managerial and leadership experience directing multi-jurisdictional, diverse teams of managers, bankers, and industry specialists.
- High-frequency interaction with Senior Risk leaders, CCOs, and regional executives, providing exposure to complex underwriting policies, cross-border regulatory frameworks, and market disruptions.
- Deep integration into Citi’s global corporate and investment banking ecosystem, expanding professional networks across product, industry, and geographic lines.
Qualifications & Experience
- 15+ Years of commercial or corporate banking experience in senior leadership roles with a demonstrated track record of commercial impact and revenue generation.
- Proven track record in managing a business with full P&L accountability, capital allocation, and budgeting responsibilities.
