Summary:
Leads a squad of engineers delivering a defined slice of the vehicle abstraction stack — for example, the VHAL core and property store, the SOME/IP-to-VHAL bridge, or the Car Framework extensions. Translates the architecture into concrete designs, owns the squad's technical quality and delivery commitment, and remains a hands-on contributor on the hardest parts of the codebase.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Design & Hands-on Engineering:
- Produce detailed design documents for assigned components: class/interface design, threading and concurrency model, property-config data model, error and timeout semantics, memory ownership.
- Personally implement or co-implement the most complex or risk-bearing parts: the IVehicle AIDL service skeleton, subscription manager, VehiclePropertyStore concurrency, the vsomeip client integration, the CAN signal-to-property mapping engine.
- Own the vendor property ID allocation scheme and the property-config JSON/ARXML generation pipeline for the squad's domain.
- Define and enforce the squad's performance budgets: property get/set latency, callback fan-out cost, IPC overhead, boot-time contribution, memory footprint.
- Android property operations to real vehicle interfaces. ( Common API, SOME/IP, CAPI style plugin, Handler Integration), Sync/Async Boardnet communication understanding.
- Release Management on Component artifactory and App Store.
- Complete Automotive domain knowledge.
Integration & Cross-team:
- Drive integration with the vehicle network layer: agree signal catalogues with the E/E and Tier-1 teams, resolve semantic mismatches (units, ranges, signal validity/error qualifiers, timeouts, not available handling).
- Own the SOME/IP contract for the squad: service/instance/method/event IDs, vsomeip configuration, service discovery behaviour, serialisation alignment with CommonAPI or the OEM IDL, E2E protection where applicable.
- Coordinate with app and framework teams consuming the properties review their CarPropertyManager usage patterns for subscription-rate and error-handling correctness.
Team Leadership:
- Break down features into level-appropriate tasks assign, estimate and track to sprint and milestone commitments.
- Run code review as the final gate for the squad's merge maintain the review standard (no unreviewed vendor-partition or SELinux change).
- Mentor engineers own their technical growth plans and provide performance input.
- Own the squad's defect triage, root-cause analysis discipline, and technical debt backlog.
Quality & Compliance:
- Own VTS coverage for the squad's HAL surface and ensure new properties ship with tests.
- Author and review SELinux policy for the squad's services and device nodes ensure no permissive domains or blanket allow rules reach production.
- Ensure ASPICE traceability: requirement , design ,code , test linkage for the squad's deliverables.
Professional & Technical Skills:
- 10+ years total, 6+ years in Android platform/AOSP, with demonstrable VHAL or comparable HAL ownership.
- Advanced HAL implementation skills: has written or substantially modified an AIDL/HIDL HAL, including VINTF manifest entries, init.rc service definition, and vendor/system partition placement.
- Advanced C++ (17 or 20): RAII, move semantics, std:: concurrency, lock-free or carefully-locked shared state, profiling with perf/simpleperf, sanitizers (ASan,TSan,UBSan).
- Strong Java and Kotlin for Car Framework and system-service work understands Binder threading, oneway semantics, and SystemServer lifecycle.
- Strong AOSP skills: Soong modules, repo workflows on a multi-manifest tree, incremental builds, lunch targets, flashing/fastboot, adb-based debugging, dumpsys,bugreport analysis.
- Solid SELinux: writing .te files, file contexts, hwservice contexts, property contexts, diagnosing denials from audit2allow while resisting the temptation to over-grant.
- Practical onboard-network experience: SocketCAN, candump/cansend, DBC files, CAN-FD framing, Automotive Ethernet basics, Wireshark analysis of SOME/IP traffic.
- Working experience with SOME/IP stacks (vsomeip,CommonAPI or a commercial equivalent) and their configuration model.
