Embedded Software Dev Engineer, Amazon Leo

As a Device Software Development Engineer on the Amazon Leo Satellite Gateway team, you will design and develop embedded software for Amazon Leo's satellite and ground systems. You’ll work on fault-tolerant, real-time platforms, collaborating closely with hardware, software systems, and product teams to deliver secure, reliable, and high-performance solutions.

This is a unique opportunity to shape the next generation of space-based communication systems with minimal legacy constraints. Your work will directly support critical government initiatives, enabling secure and high-performance communication systems for U.S. and allied missions.

Key job responsibilities
• Develop embedded software in C, C++, and Python, and Linux kernel drivers.
• Write device drivers and system applications for the various satellite systems.
• Write software to interact with micro-controllers
• Develop and maintain Linux kernel drivers and device-tree overlays for SPI, I3C, I2C, CAN, GPIO, DMA and UIO interfaces.
• Work closely with other software and hardware teams to support board bring-up and integration testing.
• Build and maintain the Yocto/OpenEmbedded distribution: BitBake recipes and layers, A/B partition boot, secure boot, eMMC and NOR storage, and SWUpdate image generation.
• Leverage modern application frameworks for Embedded Linux and bare-metal/AMP platforms to develop scalable, modular, and high-performance software.
• Debug and resolve complex hardware-software integration issues using tools like logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
• Develop kernel features required to support upcoming hardware and software capabilities, targeting AMD/Xilinx Versal and Zynq SoCs.


A day in the life
As part of the Satellite Gateway team, you will design and implement embedded software used in the Amazon Leo products. You will work in a collaborative environment with teams inside and outside of Amazon. You will craft your software from requirements, designs, code, test, to product deployment.

Basic Qualifications

- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- 3+ years of embedded firmware development experience
- 2+ years of experience with Yocto/OpenEmbedded or a comparable embedded Linux build system

Preferred Qualifications

- 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- 3+ years of experience on networking and/or consumer devices using embedded Linux, Yocto, and/or bare-metal targets; experience with eBPF/libbpf or Lua tooling.
- 2+ years of experience in manufacturing diagnostics through production phases like Hardware Validation Testing (HVT), Engineering Validation Testing (EVT), Device Validation Testing (DVT), Production Validation Testing (PVT)

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
