Senior Software Engineer (Platform Engineering)-Remote, USA

Purpose:

The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on technical leader responsible for architecting and delivering the Java-based services at the core of Ambry's platform modernization. This role ensures technology execution stays aligned with strategic business goals, owning the design and build of Spring Boot microservices that replace legacy monolith functionality. The position drives legacy system refactoring, cloud migration, microservices adoption, and CI/CD maturity across the engineering organization. It safeguards architectural coherence, actively mitigates technical debt, and provides the senior technical judgment needed to keep major initiatives on schedule and operationally sound.

Essential Functions:

• Own the end-to-end architecture, design, and implementation of Java and Spring Boot microservices across the platform.
• Define and evangelize target-state architecture, service boundaries, and upgrade paths, and document them for engineering and stakeholder audiences.
• Lead the decomposition of legacy PHP/Symfony monolith functionality into resilient, independently deployable Java services.
• Design and build AWS-native solutions using ECS/Fargate, SQS, SNS, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, and Parameter Store.
• Build and maintain secure REST APIs with robust validation, error handling, authentication, and authorization.
• Drive identity modernization, including OAuth2/OIDC and the LDAP-to-Okta migration.
• Design and optimize data access layers using JPA/Hibernate, including ORM mappings, schema evolution, index strategy, and query tuning.
• Establish engineering standards for unit and integration testing, CI/CD pipelines, observability, logging, and alerting.
• Partner with QA, DevOps, Product, Architecture, and Regulatory teams to deliver compliant, production-ready software.
• Mentor engineers across levels through code review, design review, and knowledge sharing.
• Lead technical planning and execution of complex, multi-sprint initiatives, and surface delivery risk early.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues affecting service performance, stability, and reliability.
• Maintain awareness of and compliance with SOX and HIPAA requirements in a regulated healthcare environment.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong backend focus.
• Expert-level proficiency in Java and Spring Boot, with deep experience in distributed systems.
• Demonstrated experience decomposing monolithic applications into microservices.
• Hands-on experience with AWS services (ECS/Fargate, SQS, SNS, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, IAM).
• Strong command of REST API design, authentication and authorization patterns, and enterprise integration.
• Strong experience with relational databases (MySQL/Aurora) and ORM frameworks such as Hibernate/JPA, including query tuning.
• Proficiency with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native delivery practices.
• Proven ability to lead technical direction and mentor engineers across levels.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and architectural decision-making skills.

Preferred:

• Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Experience in healthcare, genomics, diagnostics, or other regulated environments.
• Experience with Okta or comparable identity providers.
• Working knowledge of PHP/Symfony sufficient to refactor legacy functionality.
• Experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, or comparable infrastructure-as-code tooling.
• Familiarity with Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) practices.

$130,000-$150,000 USD Annually

The expected salary range above is applicable if the role is performed from California and may vary for other locations (Colorado, Illinois, New York). Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience.
