Job Description

Visa’s Observability Engineering team builds and operates enterprise-scale monitoring, logging, and tracing platforms that help power Visa’s global payments ecosystem. Our platforms support mission-critical applications and infrastructure, with an emphasis on reliability, security, resiliency, performance, and operational excellence.

The Opportunity
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can apply software engineering experience and a platform mindset to build and operate large-scale distributed systems. In this hands-on role, you will design and deliver scalable observability solutions, develop automation, and partner with application and infrastructure teams to improve reliability, performance, and operational readiness across Visa’s technology environment.

You will leverage development experience and familiarity with cloud-native platforms, observability technologies, and highly available production environments to contribute to secure, always-on digital payments. We welcome candidates with transferable platform engineering experience who are motivated to deepen their observability expertise.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop, and maintain scalable solutions for monitoring, logging, and tracing across Visa’s hybrid and cloud environments.

Build platform services, automation, APIs, and self-service capabilities using languages such as Python, Golang, or Java.

Contribute to observability architecture, engineering standards, and practical patterns that improve reliability and developer productivity.

Support large-scale deployments, platform modernization, and continuous improvement across enterprise observability platforms.

Partner with application and infrastructure teams to advance instrumentation, telemetry adoption, and production readiness for critical Visa services.

Apply Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, and GitOps practices to improve platform reliability, repeatability, and efficiency.

Participate in root cause analysis, performance optimization, capacity planning, and resiliency improvements for production platforms.

Collaborate through design discussions, code reviews, knowledge sharing, and mentorship within observability and platform engineering initiatives.

Visa requires at least 3 days in office, expectations of these days will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager. 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

• 2+ years of relevant work experience and a Bachelors degree, OR 5+ years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or more than 2 years of work experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD)

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• 4 or more years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, site reliability engineering, or a related discipline.

• Experience developing production software using any one of the programming languages Golang/Python/Java

• Experience designing, building, or operating distributed systems or platform services.

• Understanding of system architecture, reliability, performance, security, and automation principles.

• Experience working collaboratively across engineering teams and communicating technical concepts clearly.

• Analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to learn new technologies and apply them to complex engineering problems.

• Ability to adapt to next technology stack that is needed per project priorities.

• Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience with observability concepts across metrics, logs, and traces.

• Familiarity with one or more technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Fluent Bit, Elastic/OpenSearch, Splunk, or equivalent platforms.

• Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, or modern container platforms.

• Familiarity with Terraform, GitHub Actions, Ansible, GitOps, or CI/CD automation.

• Experience operating or scaling platforms in AWS, Azure, GCP, or hybrid environments.

• Experience contributing to architecture decisions, engineering standards, or platform modernization initiatives.
