Job Description

Join the Linux Engineering team responsible for building and operating secure, scalable, and automated Linux platforms that support Visa's global technology ecosystem. You'll work with modern virtualization, automation, cloud, and container technologies in a large-scale enterprise environment.

The Sr Systems Engineer - Linux Engineering will work as an individual contributor responsible for supporting RHEL, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu, virtualization, container, automation, and platform operations. The role requires strong hands-on technical skills, analytical troubleshooting ability, and experience working in large-scale production server environments.

Vision: To build and support secure, reliable, automated, and scalable Linux platforms that enable business applications to run consistently across enterprise infrastructure and hybrid environments.

Mission: To deliver high-quality Linux engineering, automation, troubleshooting, and operational support for enterprise server platforms, while maintaining strong standards for availability, security, compliance, and operational discipline.

Purpose: The purpose of this role is to apply hands-on Linux engineering and automation expertise to support stable infrastructure services, improve operational efficiency, resolve complex platform issues, and contribute to the continuous improvement of enterprise Linux environments.

Essential Functions:

• Linux Platform Support: Support, maintain, and troubleshoot RHEL, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu, and related Linux platforms in large-scale enterprise environments.
• Automation & Scripting: Develop and maintain automation using Ansible, Python, and Bash to improve consistency, efficiency, and repeatability of platform operations.
• Virtualization & Containers: Support Linux workloads running on VMware, OpenShift Virtualization, and container-based platforms.
• Troubleshooting & Reliability: Perform root cause analysis and resolve issues across operating system, compute, storage, network, monitoring, and automation layers.
• Collaboration & Documentation: Work with engineering, operations, security, and application teams while maintaining technical documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.

Visa requires at least 3 days in office, expectations of these days will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

• 2+ years of relevant work experience and a Bachelors degree, OR 5+ years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or more than 2 years of work experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD)
• 5 or more years of work experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 1-2 years of experience with an Advanced Degree such as Masters, MBA, JD, or MD.
• 4+ years of relevant work experience with a bachelor’s degree.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another relevant engineering field.
• Strong experience supporting RHEL 8-9-10, Rocky Linux 8-9-10, and-or Ubuntu 18.04-20.04-22.04 platforms.
• Hands-on experience with Linux system administration, troubleshooting, patching, performance analysis, and lifecycle support.
• Experience with Linux Engineering activities including SOI and SOE support.
• Experience with VMware, OpenShift Virtualization, Linux containers, SELinux, and Docker.
• Strong scripting and automation experience using Bash, Python, and Ansible.
• Working knowledge of x86 server platforms such as HP ProLiant and Dell PowerEdge.
• Understanding of LVM, SAN-NAS concepts, TCP-IP networking, monitoring, disaster recovery, compliance, and high-availability infrastructure.
• Experience working in IT Engineering or IT Operations environments using ITSM-ITIL practices.
• Ability to write clear technical documentation, build guides, runbooks, and operational procedures.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Motivated team player who works independently and contributes to reliable enterprise solutions.
• RHCSA, RHCE, Ansible, OpenShift, or cloud certification is a plus.

Additional Information

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 set days a week, determined by leadership-site, with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs. Must be willing to participate in 24x7 on-call engineering support on a weekly rotational basis.

Work Hours: Varies upon the needs of the department.

Mental-Physical Requirements: This position will be performed in an office setting. The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, and frequently operate standard office equipment such as telephones and computers.
