Senior Mechanical Engineer, GRAISE (Grocery and In Store Experiences) Tech

The Grocery Retail and In-Store Experience team at Amazon is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to take ownership of in-store intelligence hardware projects and additional upcoming product initiatives. You will define requirements, design and validate mechanical sub-systems, select materials and suppliers, and drive products from concept through volume manufacturing. Working alongside electrical, software, and computer vision engineers, you will solve complex problems at the intersection of mechanical design, sensor integration, and manufacturing scalability. Key job responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design of sub-systems and components through the full product development lifecycle, from concept definition and requirements through prototyping, validation, and production release.
- Define and execute test plans that validate designs against functional, reliability, and manufacturability requirements, using tools such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and environmental stress testing.
- Create and maintain detailed design documentation — including computer-aided design (CAD) models, engineering drawings, and specifications — for design reviews and manufacturing handoff.
- Manage technical relationships with contract manufacturers and component suppliers, negotiating manufacturing approaches and ensuring deliveries meet specification and schedule.
- Mentor junior engineers on design best practices and review their work, raising the overall quality and consistency of the team's mechanical output.

A day in the life
Your time will split between hands-on design work and collaboration with electrical engineers, firmware developers, and manufacturing partners. Expect to move between CAD modeling, prototype testing in the lab, supplier calls, and design reviews as you drive your sub-systems from concept to production.

The Grocery Retail and In-Store Experience team builds the hardware products that power checkout and in-store customer engagement, helping shoppers save time and money while enabling store associates to work more effectively. Our portfolio includes Dash Cart, Self-Checkout, Point of Sale, Electronic Shelf Labels, Digital Displays, and In-Store Intelligence Hardware. As the team grows, you will have the opportunity to progress from owning a major sub-system to driving the architecture of a full product. We support engineers who want to deepen their technical expertise toward a Principal Engineer path as well as those interested in transitioning into engineering management.

Basic Qualifications

- Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
- Experience with Engineering Methods for Analysis, including FEA, DFMEA, and statistical tools
- Experience with thermal analysis, product validation, and materials process validation
- Experience in engaging, working with, and managing vendors and suppliers to deliver in fast-paced technical environment

Preferred Qualifications

- Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
- Experience with the project management of technical projects
- System design interfacing to a wide array of electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical sub-systems
- Experience designing with plastic injection molding and tooling

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
