Original job description

Content provided by the employer

Want to shape how one of the world's largest retailers decides what to buy, when to buy it, and where to send it? Join our Buying Technology team and lead programs that transform Amazon's retail supply chain at massive scale.

As a Principal Technical Program Manager, you'll own the most complex, cross-cutting technical initiatives that connect our buying decision systems with the broader supply chain ecosystem. This isn't program management from a distance—you'll dive deep into system architectures, APIs, and data flows to understand how our systems actually work and how they need to evolve. You'll partner with engineering leaders to ensure teams aren't just shipping features, but building robust, well-designed systems that scale and integrate cleanly across organizational boundaries.

Your work will directly impact billions of dollars in inventory decisions and shape how Amazon serves hundreds of millions of customers.

This role is ideal for someone who:

Goes deep on technical architecture and can challenge engineering teams on design decisions
Understands distributed systems, APIs, data pipelines, and what makes systems reliable and maintainable
Has a track record of driving technical excellence—not just delivery timelines—across multiple teams
Operates as a trusted technical partner to engineering leadership
Thrives at the intersection of complex system integration and business impact

Key job responsibilities
- Own and drive Amazon's most complex, cross-organizational technical programs that transform how buying systems integrate with supply chain, fulfillment, and vendor systems
- Develop deep expertise in our systems architecture—understand how buying decisions flow through forecasting, ordering, inbound logistics, and inventory placement systems
- Drive technical alignment across teams on system interfaces, API contracts, data schemas, and integration patterns; ensure teams build for interoperability and long-term maintainability
- Partner with engineering leaders to identify architectural gaps, technical debt, and design trade-offs; influence teams to build well, not just build fast
- Shape program strategy and influence multi-year technical roadmaps across Buying and partner organizations
- Identify systemic technical risks and dependencies across distributed systems; drive resolution and make high-judgment trade-off decisions
- Build mechanisms for tracking technical program health—not just milestones, but system quality, operational readiness, and integration completeness
- Translate complex technical architectures and trade-offs into clear narratives for executive and non-technical audiences
- Mentor other program managers on technical depth and raise the bar on how TPMs engage with engineering teams
